  • Overview

    This position is responsible for supporting the sports medicine business through research and development activities for new products and processes from concept to transfer to Operations that effectively support business goals and strategic objectives for one or more technology platforms. The position reports to the R&D Director, manages several direct reports and interacts cross-functionally within and outside of the organization. The position also needs product launch experience and contributes to product development process improvements.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Management of completely new product projects, experimental plans, delegation and oversight of staff.
    • Develop sports medicine strategy by identifying and characterizing new ideas, new products/ prototypes and new processes using bench top studies and generating reports for all experiments conducted.
    • Contribution to the overall department management team for: strategic planning, innovation, R&D internal process development, engagement and annual reviews.
    • Research and development activities for new products and processes including leadership of cross functional teams during the design control/ StageGate process (700.10/1700/ 1200) (or change control), solving technical problems, identifying risks and facilitating manufacturing transfer.
    • Work with Marketing/CBD to manage projects effectively and within established time parameters.
    • Develop sports medicine strategy by identifying and characterizing new ideas, new products/ prototypes and new processes using bench top studies and generating reports for all experiments conducted.
    • Evaluate new technologies, processes and equipment and write invention disclosures in support of the department’s intellectual property portfolio.
    • Work with marketing to identify and complete studies necessary to support various product lines, generate white papers, abstract submissions to scientific conferences, and journal articles.
    • Monitor internal and external testing studies for prototype evaluation and proof of concept and product characterization.
    • Stay abreast of current literatures and new technologies.
    • Work within existing SOPs and WIs while continually providing recommendations for improvement.
    • Adhere to and promote proper practices and techniques which are consistent with current operating procedures, training requirements, safety practices and company policies.

     

     

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree with focus in cell and tissue biology, biomedical engineering, tissue engineering
    • 10+ years’ related experience with bachelor’s degree in cell and tissue biology, biomedical engineering, tissue engineering

            OR

    • 7+ years’ related experience with a Master’s degree OR
    • 5+ years’ related experience with a PhD
    • 3-5 years’ experience working with human cell and/or tissue
    • 1-2 years’ supervisory experience
    • 3+ years’ experience leading product development functions
    • Previous product launch experience
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

     

    Preferred Experience:

    • PhD or Master’s degree in cellular biology or related subject
    • 3 years’ (with PhD) cellular product development experience
    • Research & Development in cartilage regeneration
    • Sports Medicine & related segment experience
    • Experience preferred in prior product launch–preferably as team leader at some point in that process.
    • Experience with portfolio management, project selection and business implications
